How to Prepare Banga Soup with Fresh Fish (Edo Black Soup)

Banga soup is popularly known as Aka Akwu or black soup in the Edo state of Nigeria. Today we're going to explore the process of preparing the most precious banga soup recipe.

Note: In nigeria, the differences between banga and black soup is that banga contains fresh vegetables while black soup doesn't. Whatever way you like your soup, preparing black soup with vegetables results to banga.

Ingredients:

Banga (palm nut),

Bitter Leaf

Scent leaf (effirin),

Crayfish,

Dawadawa,

Pepper,

Any meat of your choice, dried fish, stock fish, or Fresh fish

Banga spice (optional)

Preparation:

1. The butterleaf and scent leaves has to be stone grinded or blended. I used stone for mine.

2. Extract the water from the banga by pounding it and adding warm water to make it easier to extract.

3. Meanwhile you're boiling your beef and assorted, after a while you add your dry fish and stock fish.

4. The bitter leaf and scent leaf has to be grinded.

5. When your meat is cooked, you add the banga water, the grinded leaves, crayfish, pepper, dawadawa, your banga spices (optional).

6. Leave to boil for a while, and stir at intervals.

7. Add salt and maggi to taste

Preparing the Banga with Vegetables

The vegetable style also require meat (chicken or fish, your choice) ugwu, bitter, effinrin, uziza, curry leafs, pepper soup spice and cray fish.

Other ingredients include prawns, dried fish, pepper (scot & bell), fresh tomato, onion, cubes, palm oil (optional) and salt to taste.

Blend all veggies with cray and dried fish together and cook or fry. It goes with any kind of meal.

This combination is also called Omo Ebe in Ishan Edo state. It has a very nice taste and also medicinal. When you taste it, your life will never remain the same.
