Agricultural Development In Nigeria
1. Lack of Education.
Everything that affects the economy of nigeria that deals with its citizen starts firmly from lack of education. This is the bush fire that has affect about every aspect of living of the african developing country. And agriculture as the basic and source food and human enjoyment has been very unproductive especially in the northern part of the country. Statistics show that the majority of the illiterate fellows fall in the northern part which is predominantly the hausa and fulani occupy.
In the sense that agricultural development in nigeria have to start from the brain to be transfered to the physical among farmers, the major challenge is education. The educated have less opportunity to explore their knowledge and the ones that are in the position to explore things are very illiterate.
2. Presence of Drought.
Lack of good or rather strict governmental policies has made some part of nigeria a desert, which are not in the past 6 to 8 years. Nigeria is a political baby and much of the attention is given to raw industrialization rather than making the land draught free. For example, when we go down to borno state located in the northern part of nigeria, some parts of the state has being suffering from desertification in the last 2 years. This is due to excessive cutting down of trees by traders to earn money. And the cutting down of trees came as result of the excessive demand of the wood trees for cooking and other important things. This is first viewed as lack of alternative due to poverty, lack of electricity, and other economic problems that has attacked the state recently.
3. Over dependency on agriculture.
Yes, over dependency on agriculture that cannot make a good outcome is one of the challenges of agricultural development in nigeria. Good percentage of farmers depend solely on agriculture and peasant farming to make living. So, there's no way one can benefit from his or her work. Although this happens because their is less option to do more than peasant farming, it is the combination of more challenges and problems.
4. Over dependency on crude oil, government.
Nigerian government depend more on crude oil. Although this problem would be tackled with hope, in the sense that they have started to realize the importance of agriculture in the country, it is something that the implementation would take more time than expected due to the many challenges that was yet to be tackled.
5. Lack of mechanised agricultural facilities.
This is just a straightforward way of involving the governmental problems of agricultural development in nigeria. Lack of the provision of good agricultural facilities is the most concentrating challenge that continue to increase the number of peasant farmers within the country. Common plougher can just be numbered in a state and less to say to make any impact in the development of agriculture in nigeria.
6. Increase in migration to urban areas.
People tend to run away from agriculture for casual work that can earn them a steady flow of income therefore neglecting their hometowns to live in cities. Although the cause of this fact of migration might also be because of the other challenges of agricultural development in nigeria to make everything worse.
7. Economic Insecurities and lack of physical securities that affects the country.
In the present, you will come to realization that nigeria is facing enough security challenges to hinder a good flow of marketing and agricultural support among industries and farmers. Negotiation between the northern and southern part of the country is less trusted and no one wants to risk his life in the other part of the country. Apart from over factors on this lists, insecurities have proven the most drastic negative effect on agricultural development in nigeria this year.
8. Ignorancy and hate of education.
It is very clear that agricultural development in nigeria is wounded due to lack of education and worse, hate of modern education to make more profitable farming system. New and improved seed are being distributed, but those that neglect it are so much in number to affect agricultural development in nigeria.
9. Poverty and Lack of farming skills.
All this two work hand in hand on challenges of agricultural development in nigeria. Lack of capital to employ workers, lack of enough money to buy improved seeds, and more challenging, lack money still to buy artificial fertilizers to make the agricultural development more interesting.
